Yesterday, I spent almost 3 full hours watching back-to-back episodes of the Mt Everest expedition series on the Discovery Channel. I’m not really sure if what I’ve been watching is current footage (albeit taped from May 2007)– or rerun material from earlier this year– but I’m totally geeked. I’m actually thinking that I’m now “caught up” on the series and can pick up the next (think NEW!) episode tomorrow evening. Is there anything better?… OK, maybe the Olympic track & field events… or the Ironman World Championship. The REAL ironman… in Hawaii. Not that 70.3 crap. Of course, this is all coming from a girl that will actually– did actually– watch the entire live footage of the recent men’s Olympic marathon qualifier in NYC. Ryan Hall– absolute running perfection. a BEAST. But, I digress…
Back to the biggest beast (bitch?!) ever– EVEREST! I first became fascinated with the mountain after reading Krakauer’s Into Thin Air. I’ve been hooked ever since. You gotta LOVE that which requires not only brute physical strength– but mental toughness as well. Combine that with the SMARTS of an athlete who intuitively knows when he’s been beaten (for the time being!) and forgoes the chance to summit Everest. Respecting the mountain. Knowing that, next spring, there will indeed be another May. another attempt. another chance to prove who’s Top Dog.
